“Students who describe themselves as lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgendered are five times more likely to miss school because of feeling unsafe. 28% are forced to drop out.”
National Gay & Lesbian Task Force, Anti-Gay/Lesbian Victimization, New York 1984

About Us

Diversity is a part of the Students Association of Mount Royal College—that works with its members and the student body to create an environment of respect and tolerance among people of diverse sexual identities. This is done through planned activities, events, and guest speakers.

Funded by the Students Association, this fee-free student-run club provides for the students of Mount Royal College an excellent opportunity to make a difference...one that is desperately needed in a world full of discrimination and prejudice. Here are just a few small statistics (courtesy of Oyster River Gay/Straight Alliance):

“97 % of students in public high schools report regularly hearing homophobic remarks from their peers” — Making Schools Safer for Gay and Lesbian Youth 1993

“53% of students report hearing homophobic comments made by school staff” — Ibid

“80% of prospective teachers report negative attitudes toward gay and lesbian people” — Sears, James. “Educators, Homosexuality, and Homosexual Students: Are Personal Feelings related to Professional Beliefs?” 1992

“11.5% of gay and lesbian youth report being physically attacked by family members” — Hetrick-Martin Institute Violence Report 1988

“Two-thirds of guidance counselors harbor negative feelings toward gay and lesbian people” — Ibid

    “42% of homeless youth self-identify as gay/lesbian” — Victims Services/Traveler’s Aid 1991

“30% of gay and bisexual adolescent males attempt suicide at least once” — Remafedi, Gary, et al. “Risk Factors for Attempted Suicide in Gay and Bisexual Youth,” 1991.

Since its regrouping in early 2006, Diversity has teamed up with the likes of its parent group The Students Association of Mount Royal College, and hosted events such as “The HIVe Party” and “Gender Bender.”
